My Top 5 True Crime Podcasts
Transcript:
I am a true crime addict. I can watch it for hours on TV, listen to podcasts at the gym, and then read a true crime book and be happy as a clam! Obviously, I don’t have that much time for true crime as a busy entrepreneur except for vacation and the rare Saturday I don’t have a long to-do list. That’s why I love true crime podcasts! Commuting, gym, cleaning the house? Podcast time!
Here are five of my favorites:
22 Hours: An American Nightmare. I couldn’t stop listening to this podcast! It’s about the murder of a couple and their 10-year-old son along with their housekeeper, the capture of the murderer, the trial, and his conviction through the eyes of the reporter assigned to the story. You get a behind-the-scenes of the investigation, the court process, and life after the horrible crime that’s unlike any other podcasts I’ve listened to.
Root of Evil. This is another unusual and very addicting podcast about the Black Dahlia murder in Los Angeles in 1947. The killer has never been caught, but there’s one man that many believe was guilty—Steve Hodel. What makes this podcast unusual is that the story is told through the eyes of his great granddaughters and how their mother accidentally discovered who her grandfather was and his ties to the murder of Elizabeth Short. There are lots of twists and turns, including the investigation into Steve Hodel by his own son who became a police officer.
The Murder Squad. This one is hosted by Billy Jenson and Paul Holes. Billy has been a journalist for decades, and Paul is a retired detective and one of the main police officers that helped catch the Golden State Killer. The goal of this podcast is to either find the killer through information from the audience or fill in the blanks for some already convicted killers on other victims whose crimes have never been solved.
Crime Junkie. This one is hosted by Ashley Flowers and co-hosted by Brit Prawat and also have a mission of catching killers, especially for victims that are overlooked because of occupation, financial status, and ethnicity. Just know that most of the cases they look at are unsolved, which can be hard for those of us who like a nice and tidy conclusion. But they are very good at throwing in some solved crimes.
The First Degree. This one I discovered recently. The hosts are Billy Jenson (the same Billy from The Murder Squad) Alexis Linkletter, and Jac Vanek, They share the details of the crime and interview those who were one degree separated from the crime by either knowing the victim or the killer. I’ve not found another true crime podcast that is based on that perspective.
I’m always looking for new ones and would love to hear your favorite true crime podcasts. I’m also developing my own true crime podcast with me and my mom as hosts, which I guarantee will be interesting by itself! My sister might join us as well. I’m looking at two perspectives to approach the podcast to make it unusual and of benefit instead of just telling the story.
